Jenniffer Janice Gonzalez is an accomplished Puerto Rican filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She holds an MFA in Film and Television Production from the prestigious University of Southern California, where she was honored with the Jack Bridges Award for Outstanding Directing.
As a director and writer, her storytelling is shaped by transformative narratives and emotionally complex characters grounded in real-life experiences. Jennifer’s films have screened at festivals across the U.S. and internationally, with a focus on stories rooted in the Latina female experience and its many nuances. In 2017, while completing her bachelor’s degree in Communication and Cinema Studies, Jenniffer wrote and directed her first short film, Se Quitó, a personal piece exploring her journey in the wake of Hurricane Maria and its aftermath. This film marked the beginning of her exploration into themes such as generational trauma, reproductive autonomy, mental health, and resilience, always approached with poetic intimacy and emotional depth.
Her most recent film, Renacer, made history when Jenniffer became the first recipient of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Reproductive Rights Accelerator Award. The project was also shortlisted for the Screencraft Film Fund. Renacer premiered at NewFilmmakers Los Angeles: InFocus Female Cinema Festival, underscoring Jenniffer’s commitment to amplifying Latina voices and telling stories that matter. The film has won several honors, including the First Look Award for Social Justice, the Toronto International Women’s Film Festival, and the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora.
Raised in Puerto Rico, a beautiful island with a complicated history that is often overlooked, Jenniffer is deeply committed to bringing visibility to stories and issues affecting underrepresented communities. She is currently developing her debut feature film, Mental, a story about mental health and friendship.
In her free time, Jenniffer writes for her Substack series, AM I?, where she gives her inner voice a platform through humorous essays that explore the questions she’s constantly asking herself. She also devotes her off-hours to being of service to her dog, Mami.
